With his book, El último vuelo del pájaro campana (1995), Andrés Colmán Gutiérrez reveals himself as a pioneer of detective fiction in Paraguay. The protagonists, the journalists Claudia Villasanti and the ex stroessnerist police officer Martín Yacaré, are in charge of a typical investigation of hard- boiled or neopolicial. This investigation becomes a trip. The protagonists go from the capital (Asunción) to the Brazilian border. Such movement allows them to show a sample of the Paraguayan society of the nineties, oscillating between democratic projects and some people ́s nostalgia for Stroessner’s dictatorship. The context of this situation is the increasing influence of Brazil.
