This essay questions the gender roles in three Nicaraguan crime novels: Managua, Salsa City (¡Devórame otra vez!) (2000) by Franz Galich, La muerte de Acuario (2002) by Arquímedes González Torres and El cielo llora por mí (2008) by Sergio Ramírez. Special attention is paid to the implicit concepts of masculinity and gender violence as well as to the narrative strategies that achieve (or not) to create a certain distance between the narrator ́s voice and the hyper-masculine behavior of the characters.
